How do I turn off my Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine?
• Turn off the engine by pressing and holding the middle power/stop button on the top for 3 seconds until you hear a “naaw” sound. The engine is now completely switched off. Any software update and/or recorded sounds will be saved in the engine for next play time.
• The engine also shuts down automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity.
Why has the Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine suddenly stopped moving?
• Perhaps it has run out of battery power? If so, replace them with 2 new 1,5V AAA batteries.

• The front lights turn red when you need to change batteries, so please make sure you have fresh ones.
• The front lights also turn red when your engine needs a software update. Connect your engine to the BRIO Smart Tech Sound app and follow the instructions.
Why doesn’t my Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine respond to the Action Tunnels or destinations?
• You may need to update the engine with the latest software using the BRIO Smart Tech Sound app. The red front lights of the engine indicate you need to connect the engine to the app and make the updates necessary (this may take a few minutes).
• Check the batteries. Even if the engine motor is running, the RFID reader in the engine might need new batteries to be able to read the chip in the Action Tunnels and destinations. When the battery is low, the front lights will start blinking with a red light.
Why do I need to update the software in my Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine?
• The Smart Tech Sound concept from BRIO World is constantly growing. To make sure that you can use the engine with products launched after you bought the engine, software updates may be required so that the engine has the latest information.
• To update the engine with the latest functions, you need to connect the engine to the BRIO Smart Tech Sound app and follow the steps in the app.
Are Smart Tech products compatible with the Smart Tech Sound products?
• The Smart Tech Sound Engine is backwards compatible with all Smart Tech products and will react to all Smart Tech destinations and Action Tunnels.
• The Smart Tech Engine is an older version of the product and therefore has no compatibility with the Smart Tech Sound destinations and Action Tunnels.
Are Smart Tech Sound products compatible with the BRIO World railway system?
• Yes, absolutely. The Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine fits all tracks and destinations in BRIO World just like any other engine from BRIO. You can also use any engine and train with the Smart Tech Sound accessories. However, the experience will only be haptic with no digital/animated functions.
How do I update my Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine with the latest Smart Tech Sound software?
1. Start your engine by pressing and holding the power/stop button on the top of the engine for 3 seconds until you hear a “wohoo” sound. Make sure you have fresh batteries with enough power to support the connection with the app.
2. Start the BRIO Smart Tech Sound app on your device and the engine will automatically pair with the app. Make sure you have Bluetooth activated on your device to make this happen seamlessly. You also need to accept the use of microphone and location access for the app.
3. Click on the Parental button in the upper right corner on the start page of the app.
4. Follow the instructions how to unlock the Parental area of the app. If there is an update ready for your engine, there is a small red dot next to the icon (it only appears the first time of use).
5. In the list, click on “Transfer new content to your engine” and follow the instructions to update your engine. This can take a few minutes, so please don’t interrupt the update process. The train indicates that it’s updating by blinking with a blue light. When the update is finished, the engine plays a “Wohoo” sound and you’re ready to start playing.
How do I pair the Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine with the app?
1. Turn on your engine and open the app on any compatible device (see App store information). The engine will automatically pair with the device as long Bluetooth is activated on the device.
2. If you have multiple devices with the Smart Tech Sound app, the engine will seamlessly pair with the first device activating the app.
3. If you want to switch between devices, close the app on your device and connection is lost. Then open the app on your second device and the engine will connect with the second device automatically. You can also control the connection by turning on and off the Bluetooth connection.
What are the different functions of the Smart Tech Sound Record & Play Engine?
• Us the three black buttons on top of the engine to move forwards, backwards and stop (middle button which is also the power button). The front lights indicate in different colours what is going on with the engine to animate the play.
• The red button on the top is a recording button where you can record your own sounds. Press and hold the button and you will hear a beep to indicate that the recording has started. Continue holding the button down and record your chosen sound. When the button is released, the recording stops and gets saved in the engine. To play the recorded sound, either push the button lightly again, drive the engine through the orange “play sound Action Tunnel” or use the BRIO Smart Tech Sound app.

• For the app to function, your device needs to be compatible for IOS version 9.0 /Android 4.1 and above
• The BRIO SMART TECH SOUND app is available in Google Play store and Apple App store. The app is free and can be downloaded as many times you want to.
• Please see the important connecting allowed permissions information at the Google Play Store and Apple App Store when downloading the App.
• You need to give the app permission to use your location and microphone, for the app to function properly with the engine, so make sure to click “yes” when asked. No data will be saved or used for other purposes.
• You need Bluetooth activated on your phone for the connection between app and device to work
• This product requires a device with Bluetooth LE
• The Smart Tech Sound Engine automatically connects to the first available device using the Smart Tech Sound App. Only one engine can be used together with one device at the same time.
• The engine can be reset to factory settings by using a button combination: Press and hold the forward and back buttons for 3 seconds until the front lights start blinking in red. Release the buttons and then repeat the same procedure again; press and hold the forward and back buttons for 3 seconds, to confirm the action. This action will delete all software updates, all recorded sounds, and the engine will be reset to factory settings.
